Introduction to Marriage & Family Therapy

An Intensive Two-Evening Course

6:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Marriage and family relationships are often where some of life’s greatest joys and deepest challenges are experienced. When difficulties arise, knowing how to respond wisely and appropriately matters.

This intensive course provides participants with a practical introduction to the principles and skills used in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Conducted over two evenings, the course combines essential psychological concepts with practical applications through interactive teaching, case discussions, role-playing, and real-life scenarios. Participants will learn how to better understand relationship dynamics, recognize areas of conflict, facilitate healthier communication, and respond appropriately when couples and families experience relational distress.

The course is facilitated by Dr. Fred Toke, PsyD, Clinical Psychologist, who brings more than three decades of experience in psychology, counseling, leadership development, and training.

IMPORTANT

This is an introductory training course and does not qualify participants to practise as licensed or registered counselors, psychologists, or marriage and family therapists.

The purpose is not to replace professional therapy, but to equip participants with foundational knowledge and practical First Responder skills to help mitigate marital and family crises and facilitate appropriate professional support when necessary.

Participants who complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion in Introduction to Marriage & Family Therapy from Lee Community College.

INTRODUCTION TO COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY / RATIONAL EMOTIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY (CBT/REBT)

INTRODUCTION TO COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY / RATIONAL EMOTIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY (CBT/REBT)

Albert Ellis developed Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy(REBT), a brief, direct, and solution-oriented therapy which focuses on resolving specific problems facing a troubled individual.

REBT is the first form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy first set forth by Ellis in 1953. Fundamental to REBT is the concept that our emotions result solely from our beliefs, not by the events that occur in our lives.
Therefore, it is of utmost importance for our beliefs to be healthy and rational, because the consequences of these beliefs will be emotional growth and happiness. If our beliefs are irrational and self defeating, our emotional life suffers from neuroses such as self-blame, depression, and anxiety.

Participants will learn the skills of teaching the client how to identify irrational beliefs, dispute them, and replace them with rational ones. Once the client is equipped with healthy beliefs, emotional difficulties and problematic behaviors are abated. Hence, clients will learn to control stress, relieve anxiety, help overcome depression, manage anger, and control emotional upsets.
